This book was a fantastic help that gave me the basic skills and confidence needed when we decided to bring my mother home at the end of her life in order to be with her family (instead of passing in the rehab/skilled nursing facility which couldn’t allow for in person visitation due to Covid!). It meant so much to all of us to have her home. Thank you so much!!

Toolkit for Caregivers fulfills its purpose perfectly. Of course, Deidre’s prose is not ornamental it’s not the kind of flowery prose that belongs in literary fiction. This book is for caregivers. It covers all the angles. It’s very practical. It’s useful. It doesn’t artificially inflate the page count.

It’s perfect!

You can learn step-by-step exactly what you need and when you need it.

You can open the book and perform a specific procedure for the first time in your life following her instructions step-by-step.

She was in your shoes. She can help. And you can feel her compassion to fellow caregivers and their patients. It makes this textbook-like book compassionate as well. You get the best of both worlds: someone who knows what is she doing and someone who speaks about it tenderly.

If you never expected to end up as a caregiver, I cannot imagine a better book for you. The author of Toolkit for Caregivers provides everything you need to take care of your loved ones. Deidre doesn’t shy away from any topic and covers them all.

She also knows exactly how you feel as a long-term caregiver and has some solutions not just for your patient, but for you.

Awesome, awesome resource for caregivers!

Deidre’s brilliant caregiving book not only highlights the tips/tricks/tasks to ease caring for your beloved husband, or grandparent or daughter…but the self-care necessary to facilitate the caregiver’s soul to recharge and not just endure the difficult days, but to thrive in giving your absolute best to your loved one. And I have shared the magic of Cetaphil facial cleanser with families-no spoiler alert here-but you will have many ah-ha moments during this vital read!! The business side of dying should be offered to every single family when a chronic and terminal illness has been diagnosed. Deidre shares the finer points that ease the transition and revealed uncommon knowledge reserved the after care, yet many silently suffer. I am so grateful to donate her amazing books to my church where it is offered to families who are caretakers and my hospital has dispersed it to the case management/gift shop and Home Health/Hospice.

There is an unbelievable amount of practical no nonsense advice in this guide. Little things like pool noodles for bed bumpers and how to use drawing sheets are invaluable tidbits from this nurse turned caregiver…This valuable resource should be available at all hospitals for caregivers. Recommended!!

I am a caregiver/wife for an Alzheimer’s patient. This Caregiver for her own husband gives all the information necessary for anyone who wants to care for a bedbound patient at home. She integrates her experience and a nurse of 15 years with her personal experience for her husband. Her solutions to many problems are inexpensive and perfect for bed bound patients. I never knew there were so many things I DIDN’T know and now I’m implementing many of her solutions. I highly recommend this book to untrained and overwhelmed caregivers.

This is a practical, no nonsense guide to caring for bedridden loved ones. It’s easy to read and follow. The author, a nurse, does not tiptoe around delicate subjects. The bonus book helps the caregiver cope once the loved one is gone. While deeply personal — the author describes hospice care for her dying husband and the aftermath — there is a wealth of useful information for all stages of death, dying, and grieving. End-of-life issues require careful planning. This book eliminates the guesswork. I highly recommend it.

This is an extremely helpful resource filled with advice and good practices that come from D. Edwards’ own experiences. As she says, nobody should have to re-invent the wheel whenever they go through such a situation.

The heart in this book lets you know it isn’t just another how to for dummies. It’s a living, breathing testimony of an exhausted wife caring for her best friend. I will definitely recommend and mention this toolkit to my patient’s caregivers.

If your loved one is coming home from the hospital and you need to get your home ready very quickly, you will appreciate this guide. Or, if your loved one is deteriorating, you can take the time to prepare and make sure you are ready when the time comes. This is an extremely helpful guide, especially if you want to avoid the nursing home scene.

Many people are thrust into caring for parents or a loved one with no idea of what to expect or what resources are available to help them. I would recommend this book for anyone who is currently caring for a loved one or who expects to care for someone.
